Urban Clothing - Are Baggy Clothes Still Acceptable?
By Nustylze
In the late 70's and early 80's when hip hop was in its infancy, urban clothing was closely tied to bright vibrant colours, more than anything else. Then in the early 90's a change happened. The hip hop genre made a change in sound and style. With this change came the birth of more hip hop inspired fashion designers and a new style of utilizing loose fitting close to show off someone's confidence, and relaxed attitude.
Since that time this loose fitting style and hip hop music, or should I just say urban culture, has grown to become not only accepted worldwide, but part of everyday culture globally. Now that we have moved on in the years since the "urban culture takeover" fashion and music have again made changes, and many people are wondering what's next. This is where question starts. So is baggy urban clothing still acceptable to wear.
I think to start to answer this question you should look at urban wear in the UK. If you take a look around the United Kingdom even from the start of the urban clothing domination, you will notice that the nation has never completely bought into the baggy urban clothing philosophy. However they have always supported the movement, and some of the UK's purest hip hop fans have and even still do wear baggier clothing.
In the U.S. it's a different mentality. Since urban streetwear is so closely tied to hip hop and its artist, it's all about followers. If an artist has enough of a following they are able to change the scope of urban wear, at least among their most loyal fans. So in the states many of the top rap artist have chosen to "move on to the next one" meaning they have chosen to adopt a different urban clothing style, and many fans have chosen to do the same. So while baggy clothes and jerseys were once the most popular, now cardigans and button-up dress shirts have seen a rise in popularity. With that being said it is important to understand that these dress shirts and cardigans are many times coupled with baggy jeans or even loose fitting hoodies and other urban clothing wear accessories.
So in conclusion, I think the best way to answer the proposed question is to look at urban culture and urban wear at both of their roots. Hip Hop was built off of confidence and has progressed worldwide due to that same confidence. True fashion follows the same line so why should urban clothing be any different? If baggy urban wear makes you happy and you are confident wearing it, then it is still acceptable. If you spend your life worrying about what people are going to say about your clothes and you in general, then hey baggy streetwear may not be acceptable for your lifestyle, but if that's who you are, then maybe urban clothing isn't for you anyway.
